Snow Leopard: Coming Friday for $29

August 24, 2009

Snow Leopard Coming FridayTo be perfectly honest, I haven’t been nearly as excited about Mac OS 10.6 Snow Leopard as I have about previous Mac OS X updates. In fact, very few people I’ve talked even seem to know that Snow Leopard exists, let alone why they should shell out for the update. Apple made the right move by pricing this update at a mere $29, since many of its features won’t benefit the vast majority of users. That’s not to say that I’d recommend against upgrading, but I wouldn’t insist on walking up early to wait in line at your local Apple Store either. I just had a chance to spend a few minutes looking at Snow Leopard, and here are a few of the highlights:

  • •Fast shutdown/boot times—all applications close and the computer shuts down in about five seconds.
  • •QuickTime X—the new minimalist QuickTime interface is very slick. Videos seem to float on your desktop.
  • •Microsoft Exchange 2007 support—you’ll now be able to access your corporate email and calendar directly from the Apple Mail app.
  • •Better file optimization—system files were about 7 GB slimmer after upgrading.
