Hands On with Powermat’s Inductive Charging Solution

August 17, 2009

powermatNine months after I first saw the Powermat demoed at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, the company is ready to launch its first two charging stations: The Portable Powermat, and a much more elegant Home model. Both Powermats will be available in Best Buy and Target retail stores on October 4th for $99.99, including a universal charging module, or Powercube.

Far more exciting than this first release, however, is the potential for the company’s inductive power technology. Unlike similar conductive charging solutions, the Powermat does not require a physical connection with the device it’s powering, so it’s able to transfer power through surfaces, such as a countertop, and even a puddle of water. The company demoed their in-home power solution at CES, which will someday enable everything from your cell phone to kitchen appliances and light fixtures to receive power without plugging into an outlet. Imagine powering a television simply by hanging it on the wall, or lighting a room by dropping a lamp on a table or floor. Wireless in-home power is still several years off, but for now, the Powermat is an acceptable solution.
